 A Search for Belonging 

 

For many people, knowledge is a path to opportunity.

For Dr. Mohammed Kaabar, however, knowledge is also a path to belonging.

During his years of study, while many were planning their futures, his first concern was where he would be able to stay.

 

 Learning Across Borders

 

In those years filled with uncertainty and displacement, his life spanned different countries, cultures, and academic systems.

Facing challenges related to finances, identity, residency, and the future, he never gave up his pursuit of knowledge.

Even as he moved across multiple countries and regions, he remained determined to complete his education, eventually earning a PhD in mathematics and embarking on a career in university teaching and academic research.

 

 Beyond the Classroom

 

Yet for him, teaching has never been just a job.

During his time at the university, he often used his free time to voluntarily organize additional online teaching sessions and learning support activities. Sometimes, a single online lecture would attract hundreds of students; at other times, discussions and Q&A sessions would continue late into the night.

Behind the flickering names on the other side of the screen were students striving to learn; on this side was a teacher willing to devote extra time to support their growth.

 

 The Meaning of Education

 

Perhaps the image of teachers and students striving together is the most beautiful expression of education.

Despite the uncertainty in his academic and professional journey, he has taught and supported hundreds of students along the path of teaching and research. The recognition and encouragement from his students have become an important source of strength that keeps him moving forward.

He has always believed that the value of education lies not only in the transmission of knowledge, but also in opening up possibilities for more people to access the future.

 

 Kindness, Resilience, and Hope

​

Students who genuinely want to learn should not be limited by financial circumstances, background, identity, or the challenges of everyday life.

For him, education is also about offering encouragement, creating opportunities, and helping students believe that their circumstances do not have to define their future. Kindness may not remove every obstacle, but sometimes it can give someone the strength to keep going.

 

Looking Forward 

 

Students’ appreciation and recognition have strengthened his belief that the true value of education often extends far beyond titles and positions.

He hopes that, in the future, his work in education will reach beyond the walls of a single classroom and connect with more students who are genuinely eager to learn but, because of circumstances such as identity, geography, financial limitations, or other barriers, do not have full access to educational opportunities.

Dr. Kaabar believes that mathematics is not merely a subject, but also a language through which we can understand the world.

His journey reminds us that borders may shape the paths we travel, but they do not have to define how far we can go.
